Empowering Bexley

Act for Change has been implementing an innovative community engagement project in Bexley, focusing on democratizing access to well-established concepts and frameworks, empowering individuals, families, and communities to transform, and enhancing capacity to respond to unstable and fast-changing conditions. The project utilizes Deep Democracy in Communities, a groundbreaking methodology that creates new ways for disaffected communities to come together and develop a community-based network of support and solidarity.

Key Outcomes and Achievements

Expanded Community Reach

The project has successfully engaged with diverse groups, including the Sikh community, women's groups, and young adults through Active Horizons. This approach has brought previously unheard voices into the conversation, contributing valuable thoughts and feelings about community needs.

Integration of Deep Democracy Forums

The project has integrated Deep Democracy Forums into other initiatives, such as reducing parental conflict and the Changemakers Youth Leadership programme. This integration has widened the scope of engagement and fostered a co-production approach with community members.

Partnerships with Local Organizations

Successful engagements have led to new partnerships, including planned parent workshops with Peabody Housing Association and various church groups.

Innovative Multilingual Approach

The project is addressing language barriers by training a Punjabi-speaking worker to facilitate Deep Democracy Forums, exploring ways to run forums in multiple languages simultaneously.

Accreditation of Training Programs

The project is securing accreditation for the Changemakers - Leadership Peer Learning Programme, adding value to participants' experiences and potentially increasing engagement.

Development of Community Engagement Scorecard

A scorecard is being developed to help communities and council teams track their progress in the community engagement process. This tool is expected to streamline future engagement efforts and improve efficiency.
